Wastewater Treatment Facility; Trickling Filter

The Bismarck Wastewater Treatment Facility included construction of a new 21 MGD trickling filter pump station and a 150’ diameter trickling filter for added capacity. Two challenges PKG faced on this project included major dewatering for deep excavations and mass concrete with structure segments ranging from 6’ to 10’ in thickness. Sheeted retention excavations and deep foundations required lowering groundwater levels by 20’ over a period of a year via a dewatering well system. Due to the size of the mass concrete foundations, it was imperative to limit the max concrete temperature to 150° F with a differential temperature (center to exterior) of 35° F. Thermal monitoring was accomplished by utilizing ConXedge, a cloud-based thermal management solution that communicated real-time thermal data.
