Water Reclamation Facility – South Plant Improvements Phase II

Major expansion is underway at the Rapid City Water Reclamation Facility to increase capacity to the South Plant operations. PKG Contracting was the successful low bidder for this project in April of 2024. The project includes construction of a new 230’ x 75’ Aeration Basin, two new 120’ diameter Clarifiers, new Solids Dewatering Building, new Electrical Building, new RAS/WAS Pump Building, and new Solids Storage Tank. In addition to the new structures, the project also consists of renovations and upgrades to multiple existing facilities within the plant property that equates to a total of 28 different areas of work! New site piping ranging from 4” to 66” in size will be installed throughout the project site which presents a challenge with some being buried at depths in excess of 32’ below grade. To help mitigate concerns about inconsistent or poor soils on the site, deep concrete pier foundations are being utilized below new buildings to support the loads down into the shale. Upon completion of the expansion at the South Plant, PKG will be tasked with decommissioning and demolishing a large portion of their existing North Plant facilities that include two Trickling Filter tanks, Secondar Clarifier basins, RBC (rotating biological contactors) basins, Tertiary Clarifiers, and other miscellaneous mechanical and structural demo. The site will be re-graded and finished with nearly 250,000 square feet of new paved surfaces for access to the expanded facility!
