SDEDA; Wastewater Treatment Facility Project

This state-of-the-art facility located on the eastern edge of Box Elder, South Dakota was built to process influent flows from Ellsworth Air Force Base and Box Elder. This project additionally addressed compliance issues associated with its aging and full-capacity lagoon system.

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) designed for an average daily flow of 3.0 MGD enables peak flows of 9.3 MGD. The SBR facility was constructed directly adjacent to existing ponds, consisting of 7,400 cubic yards of structural concrete. Other new structures included an influent Parshall Flume, Process Building with fine screening, pumping, sludge dewatering, and blowers. A separate Grit Removal Structure, UV Disinfection, Pressate Lift Station, and Administration Building/Garage were also constructed.

Upon successful start-up of this new facility, PKG self-performed decommissioning of the existing lagoon system including dewatering and land application of the sludge per SD DENR regulations.
